In December 1698 stated Johan Albert Bouwens van der Boye, Baron of Neeryssche and lord of Venray, a willingness to build a chapel in the town of Smakt. The conditions, including the foundation took place, were laid down in an agreement with the pastor of St. Peter Parish Band, dated October 7 1699. A short time later the bishop of Roermond gave his approval.
