Before Interstate 85 was built, U.S. Route 1 was the way to go from Raleigh to Richmond and points north and south. Most traffic bypasses U.S. 1 today and it's only local folks and the occasional waymarker on this route. There were once a couple of thriving business at the border, but they are long abandoned.
