The last time US gunboats fired on an enemy threatening the US mainland occurred here in 1814, when US Naval forces engaged the British fleet. That bit of history is preserved in this historic marker placed very near the shores of Lake Bourgne.
The marker reads as follows:
"NAVAL BATTLE OF BAY ST. LOUIS
On December 14, 1814, five US gunboats fired on a British fleet entering Lake Bourne. Their action was the last naval defense of the US before the victory of Gen. Andrew Jackson at New Orleans."
