The colossal neoclassical sculpture was designed by French sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The statue of Liberty is an icon of freedom and of the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.

The Staten Island Ferry is a great place to take pictures of the Statue of Liberty.
