Long Description:
Constructed in 1880, the Washington Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal
Zion Church, housed the Union Methodist Episcopal Church until 1915 when the
building was purchased by Washington Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal
Zion. Although partially reconstructed after a 1911 fire, the building remains a
good local example of Gothic Revival style architecture. It has long been a
center for the African-American community in St. Louis. The original design was
the earliest known example of architect August M. Beinke's ecclesiastical work.
