Groundhog Day in the area has it's origins from early German settlers of Pennsylvania who celebrated Candlemas (using a groundhog instead of a hedgehog). Dating back to 1887, the "prognostication" takes place around 7pm every February 2nd.
The entire weekend is a winter festival with ice carving, film showings (Groundhog Day) and shops around town. The main festival on February 2nd begins early at 3 A.M. at Gobbler's Knob. A bon fire, music and entertainment lasts until a fireworks display around 6:30 A.M.
At 7, Phil's "Inner Circle" comes to Gobbler's Knob and after introductions, the president taps on the door with his cane and the handlers retrieve Phil to make his prediction. The president then speaks to Phil in "groundhogese" before reading off the prediction of an early spring or long winter.
