"Avant hier, 16 janvier, je suis parti du port de la Rochelle pour me rendre sur les lieux de pêche lorsque par le travers de la digue Richelieu, j'ai été hélé par le vapeur de pêche Imbrim. Ayant fait route sur lui, le patron de ce vapeur me dit, qu'il avait sa machine engagée par suite de câbles enroulés sur son hélice et me pria de bien vouloir la prendre à la remorque, je l'empêchai ainsi d'aller se briser à la côte à la suite de vents de S.-O. qu'il faisait. Après avoir manoeuvré et pris Imbrim à la remorque je suis retourné la Rochelle ou je suis arrivé à une heure trente le soir, mais par suite du vent qui se leva, je pus passer la nuit en rade de Rivedoux (Ile de Ré). Au matin le vent ayant un peu molli, je fis déraper et me mis en route vers 7 heures en passant par le pertuis d'Antioche, lorsque arrivé à Chassandon au Sud, j'ai aperçu un navire quatre mâts du coté des Baleines. Ayant jugé que ce navire occupait une mauvaise position, j'ai mis le cap sur lui main quand je suis arrivé à moins de 2 milles de lui j'ai constaté qu'il était coulé sur lieux dits "Grandes-Brioches". Moi-même en ce moment je me trouvais aux accores de brisants. Après avoir consulté mon équipage du regard et étudié l'état de la mer pendant dix minutes environ, j'ai commandé à manoeuvrer pour m'approcher du navire, manoeuvre très difficile par suite des lames qui se brisaient furieusement et qui a chaque instant couvrait mon vapeur d'un bout à l'autre. D'un autre côté, par suite de la grande houle, lorsque je me trouvais entre les lames, je risquai de talonner et de briser mon hélice sur les rochers. Enfin après une heure environ de manoeuvres très difficiles et après avoir essuyé quatre ou cinq paquets de mer dont chacun d'eux rendait la tache bien difficile, en remplissant jusqu'au haut des pavois 50 centimètres d'eau environ sur le pont, me menaçant ainsi de me faire sombrer à mon tour, j'ai pu accoster le navire quatre-mâts Gers et prendre don équipage comprenant 31 hommes. Cette manoeuvre a encore présenté bien des difficultés, principalement pour les hommes qui étaient déjà blessés et le navire, qui avait ses vergues brassées carré, m'a obligé à me tenir toujours sur son arrière, malgré la mer qui me poussait à aller de l'avant. Je pus tenir mon bateau en respect, grâce au bon concours de la machine, car si j'avais couru de l'avant, ma mâture et mon tuyau seraient venu butter dans les vergues du voilier et tout démâter, risquant de tuer quelqu’un. Après avoir sauvé tout l'équipage, j'ai quitté le navire et suis sorti en prenant toujours les mêmes précautions. Cette manoeuvre a été commencée à 9 heures environ et terminée à 10 h. 45 du matin…"
