Edward Callam was born at Great Kimble, Buckinghamshire in 1904. He studied art under F.F. May and later with a group of artists from Goldsmiths' College. He had exhibitions at the Royal Academy, Societe des Artistes Francais, RBA and ROI. He was a member of the Society of Sussex Painters and specialised in landscapes and architecture. He died in 1980.

The painting, oil on hardboard and dated 1972, is in the collection at Wardown Park Museum, Luton. It is one of a collection in the Celestial County series, depicting locations in Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.
