THE SITE, ITS HISTORY, ITS DEVELOPMENT
Ricou's career is one of many mining sites open to the west and south of Saint-Maixent-school, particularly in the Sèvre Valley. All these sites, abandoned for at least thirty years, allowed to exploit the sandstone formations and / or carbonated Lower Jurassic (Lias) for the production of building materials (stones) and materials of metalling (aggregates).
This career was still active on the eve of World War II. It was the subject of a seasonal operation (winter) by (s) mender (s) communal (to) that were specifically responsible for backfill paths. After World War II, between 1947 and 1953, it was a short boom linked to the building of the US base in Chizé. The various operations were largely manual and rudimentary tools used (crowbar, mass, pick and shovel, fork stones ...). Only crusher working on diesel.
The heritage character of career Ricou decided the town of Azay-le-Brûlé to fund a study to conduct a heritage assessment (flora, fauna, geology and geomorphology, landscape ...) over an area of about 6 acres around Site and to propose a development scenario (RN Toarcian Thouars & TMC, Nantes, 2005), which became a reality in 2009.
GEOLOGICAL BACKGROUND
Ricou's career up to the side of the threshold of Aquitaine Poitou where the sedimentary cover unconformably overlies granitic and metamorphic basement relating to the Armorican Massif.
Coverage dated lower and middle Jurassic (Callovian to Hettangien), consists of lenticular continental deposits (sand and gravel) which is followed by a series of fossil marine origin. It is largely covered by regolith (silty clays) whose age is uncertain (Cenozoic broad sense).
The base, which is flush especially in the valley of the Sèvre is represented by metamorphic rocks (mica schist, paragneiss, amphibolite ...) belonging to the Unit Hermitain and Roc Brain Unit (probable Cambrian).
DESCRIPTION
Ricou's career is one of many mining sites that have been opened to the west and south of Saint-Maixent-school, particularly in the Sèvre Valley. All these sites, abandoned for at least thirty years, allowed to exploit the sandstone formations and / or carbonated Lower Jurassic (Lias) for the production of building materials (stones) and materials of metalling (aggregates).
During its operation, the working face (> 10 meters) intersected several geological formations. These courses can be observed in detail at a ravine located a few hundred meters to the west.
The geological formations that range from Hettangien Pliensbachien to show sedimentation in shallow marine environment. Moreover, the presence of coarse clastic intercalations (conglomerate and arkose) in deposits pliensbachiens certify the nearby continental area. However, while the upper limestone sublithographic Sinémurien are characteristic of a confined environment (see sub-lagoon), sediments in pelagic fauna Pliensbachian accumulated on a carbonate platform widely open on the ocean area. The flat surface hardened and oxidized at the top of the upper Sinémurien is a major sedimentary discontinuity that marks the beginning of a new megasequence, possibly to link with the opening of the Atlantic Ocean.
LE SITE, SON HISTOIRE, SON AMENAGEMENT
La carrière de Ricou fait partie des nombreux sites d’extraction ouverts à l’ouest et au sud de Saint-Maixent-l’Ecole, notamment dans la vallée de la Sèvre niortaise. Tous ces sites, à l’abandon depuis au moins une trentaine d’années, permettaient d’exploiter les formations gréseuses et/ou carbonatées du Jurassique inférieur (Lias) destinées à la production de matériaux de construction (moellons) et de matériaux d’empierrement (granulats).
Cette carrière était encore en activité à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Elle faisait l’objet d’une exploitation saisonnière (hiver) par le(s) cantonnier(s) communal(aux) qui étaient notamment chargés de remblayer les chemins. Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, entre 1947 et 1953, elle a connu un essor de courte durée lié à la construction de la base américaine de Chizé. Les différentes opérations étaient essentiellement manuelles et les outils utilisés rudimentaires (barre à mine, masse, pelle et pioche, fourche à cailloux…). Seul le concasseur fonctionnait au gasoil.
Le caractère patrimonial de la carrière de Ricou a décidé la commune d’Azay-le-Brûlé à financer une étude visant à réaliser un bilan patrimonial (faune, flore, géologie et géomorphologie, paysage…) sur un périmètre d’environ 6 hectares autour du site puis à proposer un scénario d’aménagement (RN Toarcien, Thouars & TMC, Nantes, 2005) qui se concrétisa en 2009.
CONTEXTE GEOLOGIQUE
La carrière de Ricou appartient au versant aquitain du seuil du Poitou où la couverture sédimentaire repose en discordance sur un socle granitique et métamorphique se rattachant au Massif armoricain.
La couverture, datée du Jurassique inférieur et moyen (Hettangien à Callovien), se compose de dépôts continentaux lenticulaires (sables et graviers) auxquels succède une série fossilifère d’origine marine. Elle est largement recouverte par des altérites (argiles limoneuses) dont l’âge est incertain (Cénozoïque lato sensu).
Le socle, qui affleure notamment dans la vallée de la Sèvre niortaise, est représenté par des roches métamorphiques (micaschistes, paragneiss, amphibolites…) appartenant à l’Unité de l’Hermitain et à l’Unité de Roc Cervelle (Cambrien probable).

Lors de son exploitation, le front de taille (> 10 mètres) recoupait plusieurs formations géologiques. Ces formations peuvent être observées en détail au niveau d’une ravine située à une centaine de mètres vers l’ouest.
Les formations géologiques qui s’échelonnent de l’Hettangien au Pliensbachien témoignent d’une sédimentation en milieu marin peu profond. D’ailleurs, la présence d’intercalations détritiques grossières (conglomérats et arkoses) dans les dépôts pliensbachiens atteste la proximité du domaine continental. Néanmoins, alors que les calcaires sublithographiques du Sinémurien supérieur sont caractéristiques d’un environnement confiné (cf. sub-lagunaire), les sédiments à faune pélagique du Pliensbachien se sont accumulés sur une plate-forme carbonatée largement ouverte sur le domaine océanique. La surface plane, durcie et oxydée au sommet du Sinémurien supérieur correspond à une discontinuité sédimentaire majeure qui marque le début d’une nouvelle mégaséquence, probablement à mettre en relation avec l’ouverture de l’océan Atlantique.
