This old artillery shell is on display in the niche of a wayside wall in the south of Breisach. This is at the road through the vineyards up to the castle ruin Eckardsberg.
I could not find any specific documentation about this shell, except for the fact that it was put on display to commemorate the suffering of Breisach in the late days of World War II. When the allied forces managed to cross the Rhine in Spring 1945, 85% of the city was destroyed. I can only guess that this shell was an unexploded device that was found during reconstruction in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
