The South West of New Zealand is one the great natural areas of the world. It is internationally recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known to the original Maori inhabitants as Te Wai Pounamu (the greenstone waters), the 2.6 million hectare site covers almost 10% of New Zealand’s total land area and encompasses four national parks: Westland Tai Poutini, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Mount Aspiring/Tititea and Fiordland.

The plaque is located at the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre in Franz Josef Township. The inscription reads:

"World Heritage Site
Westland and Mount Cook National Parks were inscribed on the world heritage list of natural sites on 28th November 1986 because of their exceptional universal value. / This plaque was dedicated by the Honourable Helen Clark Minister of Conservation on 2nd April 1988"

The coordinates are from the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre in Franz Josef.
