A special survey disk set by the LA Society of Professional Surveyors commemorating the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase in 2003 is set in the concrete at the Old Parish Courthouse in downtown Natchitoches LA.
Natchitoches was founded in 1714 by the French explorer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis. It is the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, so it is appropriate that a special survey benchmark would be placed here.
The disk reads as follows:
"LOUISIANA PURCHASE BICENTENNIAL
1803 2003
[Map of US with LA purchase area inscribed and Natchitoches LA indicated with a Fleur de Lis]
Natchitoches 1714
LA Society of Professional Surbeyors
2003"
