The Louvre Museum once served as the French Royal Palace and Alexandre Dumas began his historical novel "Queen Margot" here. The very first chapter features the royal wedding of Princess Margot (who become the Queen of Navarre upon her marriage) to King Henri de Navarre on August 18, 1572. Margot, also known as Marguerite de Valois, is the sister of the hosting French King Charles IX.
The wedding is an arranged one without any love between the parties. In fact, the wedding seethes with discontent on all sides as Margot, a Catholic, is wed to Henri, a Protestant during a period of religious unrest. Their marriage is an effort to soothe affairs.
Many subsequent events in the novel also take place at the Louvre.
The novel's French name is "La Reine Margot".
