The memorial commemorates firefighters who have died or been killed in undertaking their duties, and the firefighters who provide fire and rescue services to the community.
The Memorial Gardens were created to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by volunteers, emergency service works and military service men and women. The Memorial Flame artwork situated at the northern extremity of the Memorial Gardens, has been placed in remembrance of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duties.
The inscription reads
"Qld Fire & Rescue Service
Every day firefighters place themselves in harms way to protect the communities they serve. Since 1877 many Queensland Firefighters have lost their lives in the performance of their duty.
This memorial recognises both the Firefighters who have paid the ultimate price, and their colleagues, those Firefighters who are dedicted to providing fire and rescue services for the urban, rural and remote communities of Far North Queensland."
