La première tranche du stade (8.000 places) fut inaugurée le 2 septembre 1978 par un match de championnat de Division 2 contre Amiens.
Dès l'année suivante, la capacité est portée à 22.000 places.
Le record d'affluence est de 21.595 spectateurs pour un match de championnat opposant le Tours Football Club à l'AS Saint-Etienne le 29 mai 1981.
