This station is a National Geodetic Survey standard vertical control mark, located in New Milford, CT. It is set in the south end of a concrete headwall atop a culvert near the southbound side of U.S. Rt. 7.:
DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1984 3.0 KM (1.85 MI) SE FROM GAYLORDSVILLE. 3.0 KM (1.85 MI) SOUTHEAST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 7 FROM THE JUNCTION OF STATE HIGHWAY 55 IN GAYLORDSVILLE TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT, IN TOP OF THE SOUTHEAST END OF A CONCRETE HEADWALL FOR A BOX CULVERT UNDER THE HIGHWAY AND OVER SQUASH HOLLOW BROOK, 5.00 METERS (16.4 FT) SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY, 42.67 METERS (140.0 FT) NORTH-NORTHWEST OF THE CENTER OF SQUASH HOLLOW ROAD, 12.50 METERS (41.0 FT) SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF UTILITY POLE 242. THE MARK IS 0.48 METERS NNW FROM A WITNESS POST. THE MARK IS ABOVE LEVEL WITH HIGHWAY.
The description is good, except that the mark appears to be at the southwest corner of the culvert.
Traffic on this roadway is rather high, and it is relatively narrow in spots up this way. Parking is limited, but not impossible.
In this case, park on the opposite side of the road from the mark, off the northbound side of the road just before Squash Hollow Road turnoff, and the curve.
This culvert is close to the roadway, and you will be placing yourself in a blind spot to southbound traffic, which can be very hazardous. Wait for all traffic to pass before attempting a recovery.
Think ahead, be safe.
