FR : Vous pénétrez ici dans la forêt de Fontainebleau autrefois forêt de Bière, par ce que l'on appelait " La porte aux vaches ", immortalisée par Jean François Millet dans une toile conservée à Boston.
Il fallait une porte, bien sûr, puisque la forêt était enclose par un mur. Les pierres de ce mur, en grès de la forêt naturellement, ont depuis servi à bien des Barbizonnais pour construire leurs maisons ! >
En montant vers le monument dédié à Millet et Rousseau, < écoutons Gassies une dernière fois :
Cette amitié entre les deux grands peintres ne devait finir qu'à la mort de Rousseau, elle date de leur installation à Barbizon, et comme ils furent unis dans la vie, le sculpteur Chapu ne les a pas séparés dans le beau bas-relief de bronze qu'on voit encastré dans une roche à l'entrée de cette forêt qu'ils ont tant aimée.

The friendship between the two great painters was to end at the death of Rousseau , the date of its installation in Barbizon, and as they were united in life, the sculptor Chapu has not separated in the beautiful bas-relief bronze seen embedded in a rock at the entrance to the forest they so loved.
