This plaque is dedicated to Kolb’s Alabama Battery commanded by Captain R. F. Kolb in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863. This is the only monument to Kolb’s Alabama Battery on the battlefield.

Text on the plaque reads:
C
Kolb’s Alabama Battery.
2 6 PDRS., 2 12 PDR. Howitzers.
Williams’ Artillery Battalion.
September 20, 1863

Capt. R. F. Kolb, Commanding.
1st Lieut. Robert Cherry.
1st Lieut. P. F. Powers.
2D Lieut. Robert Flournoy

The battery crossed the Chickamauga with the Battalion at Alexander’s bridge early in the morning of the 19th, was held as the reserve artillery of Buckner’s Corps and took position in rear of his line where the battery remained for several hours occasionally under artillery fire but not engaged. About 11 A.M. of the 20th the battery was ordered forward, taking several positions without becoming engaged. About 5 P.M. the battery came into position on this ground under the direction of Major Porter, chief of artillery, and opened fire on the enemy who was crossing the road from east to west.

The fire was kept up with effect till Gen. Stewart’s division advanced and closed in across the front, when the battery ceased firing. Casualties of the battle: men killed 2; men wounded 1; horses killed 1; wounded 3.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
