A First Congregational Church in what is now Amherst, MA as first authorized by the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1739 and constructed in 1743. The present First Congregational Church was built in 1868 across from the family homestead of Emily Dickinson, whose brother Austin was chair of the building committee.
Over towards the edge of the lawn stands the peace pole. On it reads the universal message May Peace Prevail On Earth in eight languages, two to a side. They are: English - Japanese, Hebrew - Turkish, Swahili - Chinese, and Arabic - Cherokee.
