Archibald Ziegler was born in London in 1903 and studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts and at the Royal College of Art. He taught drawing and painting at St Martin’s School of Art and art history at Morley College, London and the Workers’ Educational Association. He had 14 one man exhibitions in his lifetime and exhibited at the Royal Academy 12 times. Just before his death in 1971 he had the distinction of being the first living artist to exhibit at Kenwood House.

At the time of the painting the artist would have been on the South bank of the river. Today trees obscure the view, but a good approximation can be had from the bridge. The watercolour painting, dated 1941, is part of the Recording Britain collection at the V&A Museum.
