Long Description:
This plaque is dedicated to Clayton’s Brigade commanded by Brig. Gen. Henry D. Clayton in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863 at 11 A.M. This is one of six plaques to Clayton's Brigade on the battlefield.

Text on the first plaque reads:
No. 42-B

Sept. 20, 1863. 11 A.M., 2nd Position.

About 11 o’clock the brigade advanced with the rest of the division from its position beyond the first crest east of this tablet. Upon reaching the open ground it was subjected to a heavy fire of artillery and small arms and suffered severely. It, however, pushed own to the Lafayette Road from which point it was compelled to withdraw by the troops of Brannan and Reynolds posted behind field defenses of rails and stones. The brigade retired to the morning position and was not further engaged until the general advance shortly before sundown. Taking into action Sept. 19th 1446 officers and men. Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
