Octo is a 1980 creation by Wendy Taylor made of stainless steel and suspended over a pool of water. The twisting ribbon of stainless steel makes a figure of eight. Reputedly based on a Möbius strip, a mathematical term describing a continuous surface created by twisting a long rectangular strip through 180º and joining the ends. This form does not have an inside or an outside but the sculpture certainly does not follow this form.
It was unveiled by Baroness Llewelyn-Davies of Hastoe P.C. on 28th October, 1983. Baroness Llewelyn-Davies' husband, Lord Llewelyn-Davies (1912-1981) inspired the master plan for the new city of Milton Keynes.
