Mr John Wynne, Citizen and Merchant of London, left a yearly stipend to every poor person living in these almshouses 'until the Worldes End'.
There are six cottages in the row, each of two stories, brick built with steeply tiled roofs, mullioned windows below and dormer windows above. Over the windows is the date Anno Domini 1621, and in the middle there is the following inscription on a stone: 'Theis almes howeses are the gieft of Mr. John Wynne cittezen and mercer of London latelye deceased who hath left a yearely stipend to everey poore of either howses to the worldes end September Anno Domini 1621.' On the south side are the arms of the Merchant Adventurers, and on the north a shield of the Mercers' Company.
The cottages are separated from the street by a low red brick wall with moulded tapered copings sloping up to a central, slightly projecting gabled arched gateway, itself gabled with an inscribed and recessed rectangular panel over archway. There are iron gates in the archway opening. The wall and archway have been grade II listed since 15 August 1974.
The inscription also records the foundation of the almshouses but is written in slightly more modern lettering and spelling:-
These Alms Houses are the Gift of
Mr.JOHN WYNN Citizen and Merch. of LONDON
lately deceased who hath left a yearly Stipend
to every Poor of Either House to the worlds End
Sep.Anno Dom 1621.
Just inside the arch, on the left, is a well, now capped with a steel plate.
The chimneys are tall, some 3.8m above the ridges, of four flues, each chamfered and square arranged in a square stack, each now topped with modern caps.
