Long Description:
This plaque is dedicated to Van Derveer’s Brigade in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 19, from 8:00 A. M. to 12 noon.

Text on the plaque reads:
Van Derveer’s Brigade.
Brannan’s Division – Thomas’ Corps.
Col. Ferdinand Van Derveer.
Sept. 19, 1863, 8 A. M. to 12 noon

87th Indiana, Col. Newell Gleason.
2nd Minnesota, Col. James George.
9th Ohio, Col. Gustave Kammerling.
35th Ohio, Lieut. Col. Henry V. Boynton.
4th U. S. Artillery, Battery I, Lieut. Frank G. Smith

About half an hour after Croxton’s Brigade had engaged the enemy near Jay’s Mill Van DerVeer’s Brigade deployed arrived on this ground and swinging towards the south east became engaged with Forrest’s Calvary dismounted, soon re-enforced by Ector’s infantry Brigade of Walker’s Division. The Brigade held its ground and repulsed all attacks. Soon after 11 A.M. King’s Brigade of Baird’s Division was driven over Van DerVeer’s lines by Liddell’s Division, and its battery (H, 5th U. S. Artillery) was captured. The 9th Ohio, supported by the 17th Ohio of Connell’s Brigade , charged from the right of Van DerVeer’s line, recapturing the regular battery.

Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
