A simple plaque in the rest area reads:
"The California Civil Engineering Achievement 1980. Interstate Highway 5."
The plaque was placed by the California State Council of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Interstate 5 is the main highway in the west coast of the United States. It largely runs parallel to the Pacific Coast and stretches over 1300 miles from the Canadian Border to the Mexican board. It's the only interstate to touch both Canada and Mexico.
In the 1970s, the present day 8 lane freeway was finished and because of federal funding, it was named Interstate 5.
