Stanley Orchart, born in 1920, studied at Leeds School of Art and specialised in landscape painting in both oils and watercolour. He painted several commissions, the Queen Mother being a patron. His subject matter was largely in East Anglia, around his home in Great Staughton, Cambridgeshire.

The Hill in Wheathampstead runs North – South and is a busy commuter route into St Albans. It is unlikely the artist braved this road, despite the perspective indicating that he did. It is more likely that he used the garden of Wayside Cottage, opposite Dolphin House, which extends several feet further than the pavement. The now photo has been taken at the end of the pavement at Wayside Cottage. Venturing further up the hill would be very DANGEROUS. The now photo is augmented by a photo from above Dolphin House on the same side of the road and a Google Street View picture with approximately the right perspective. A noticeable feature that identifies the location is the raised and buttressed pavement outside Dolphin House.

The painting, oil on canvas and dated 1961, is in the collection of St Albans Museum.
