Enslin Hercules du Plessis was born in South Africa in 1898. He served in the First World War and later became a journalist on the Star. In 1922 he settled in London as a journalist on the Argus SA newspapers. By 1928 he was painting seriously. He was elected a member of the London Group in 1929. He retired from journalism in 1956 and began full time painting. In 1972 he was awarded the South African Akademie Medal of Honour for painting.
Priors Barn is one of the finest examples of an aisled barn in southern England. It is owned by English Heritage and is open April to October. The painting, pencil and bodycolour on paper, is in the Recording Britain collection of the V&A.
