Barbara Jones (1912-1978) was born in Croydon and studied art at Croydon School of Art and the Royal College of Art. During WW2 she worked on the Recording Britain project. After the war she created murals for the Britain Can Make It, Enterprise Scotland, and Festival of Britain exhibitions. She also created murals for P& O liners.
Barbara Jones was a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and was made its Vice president in 1969. She was also a Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute and a member of the Society of Authors.

The position of the artist is in the corner of the small graveyard. The graveyard is bounded by a stream that is close to the church frontage, hence the perspective of the painting. The painting, in watercolour and dated 1942, was produced for the Recording Britain project and is in the collection of the V&A.
