The current pub was re-built in 1888 to replace an earlier pub that had stood on the site since the Elizabethan era. The pub, when re-built, appears to have been named "Ye Old Rose & Crown" but at some point "Ye Old" was dropped from the name.
A large plaque on the corner of the building, as well as displaying the date, tells us:
Ye Old
Rose
and
Crown
established
in the reign
of
Queen
Elizabeth
Rebuilt
AD
1888
Above this plaque is a crown and above that is a rose.
