Both Carroll Blvd and a County Administration Building bear the name of Joseph A. Carroll, a prominent mover and shaker who platted the town of Denton. He was also an attorney, a farmer, a judge, a banker, and a civic leader, also serving with the Confederacy as a major during the Civil War. One face on the base of the obelisk is blank, while those referenced on the other faces are:
