Don Gaspar de Portolà explored the California coast in 1769, seeking Monterey harbor and discovering San Francisco Bay. In 1770 he mounted a second expedition that ultimately founded Monterey.
His statue stands in Portala Plaza, near downtown, along with this plaque
Captain Don Gaspar de Portlà, of the army of King Carlos III of Spain, first Governor of California, 1769-1770. With Father Junipero Serra founded Monterey on June 5, 1770.
Donated H. M. King Juan Carlos I of Spain to the City of Monterey on the Bicentennial of the United States of America.
