Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.
The Boot Inn is still recognisable on the front elevation and part of the side elevation. The left most part of the side elevation has been altered somewhat. The painting is a watercolour, undated, and is in the collection of St Albans Museums.
