The column located in the middle of the Westminster' Broad Sanctuary, erected in 1861, is work of architect Sir George Gilbert Scott and sculptor John Birnie Philip. The top of almost 19 m high granite (Peterhead) Corinthian column is decorated by statues of St. George with dragon, King Edward the Confessor, King Henry III, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. The limestone (Portland) column's base, 4 m high, is decorated by lions statues.
