Franciscan Lodge, opened in 1950 between the Mother Road, & the Santa Fe rail track. The Franciscan used to have 2 iconic neon signs. Alas current Route 66 travellers only get to see the remaining, so called flat sign. Located in Grants, New Mexico

The photo I posted in the gallery for this listing shows the flat letter sign, approx. 40 feet long, the neon text reads 'Franciscan Lodge' and smaller writing above states 'Your Home on the Road'.

Description of the two signs, from flickr web site:
"The Franciscan Lodge offers a relatively rare example of double neon signage incorporating two distinct types of signs. A sign mounted on three metal posts is located in the northeast courtyard of the double L-plan motel and is approximately 30 feet high and 39 feet wide. Using the flat letter style, it contains the neon-lit words “Franciscan Lodge” topped by the smaller lettered “Your home on the road.” A second rooftop-mounted sign is approximately nine feet high and nine feet wide and is located above the hipped roof of the office and secured with guy wires. Also using the flat letter style, the sign contains neon-lit words “Franciscan Lodge”, “No Vacancy”, and “Office”, with “TV” on a panel that was added to the original sign. An arrow with two arcs and illuminated by sequentially animated light bulbs points downward toward the office door." Text source: (

"Grants is a true Route 66 town and has vintage motels backed right up to the Santa Fe tracks. At night you can fall asleep listening to the sounds of the trains rolling by. To me that is a soothing sound and brings back childhood memories of traveling along Route 66." Text Source: (
