Mike Rogers dreams of owning a wrecked house called Gypsy’s Acre. He meets rich heiress Ellie Goodman at Gypsy’s Acre and later marries her. An old school friend, Robbie Hayman, is an architect and designs a house for the site of Gypsy’s Acre. Hayman is endebted to Rogers for attempting to save Hayman’s brother when he fell through ice whilst skating. A local gypsy, Esther Lee, curses Rogers and his wife.

Ellie has a mysterious friend Swedish friend, Greta, who has great influence over Ellie. Rogers and Greta do not get on and Rogers blocks Ellie from having Greta to stay. Ellie is also friendly with Claudia Hardcastle. The two share an interest in horse riding and both have a common allergy.

Ellie goes horse riding and goes missing after being cursed by Lee. She is later found dead by her horse. The police search for Lee, but don’t find her. Miss Marple searches Lee’s cottage and finds a roll of money. Some little while later, Claudia Hardcastle dies in a riding accident similar to Ellie’s. This time Miss Marple finds the body quite soon after death. She realises that cyanide was the cause of death.

Miss Marple visits a grotto in the garden of Gypsy’s Acre and finds some allergy pills there that Ellie used to take. She guesses that the pills were doctored to kill Ellie and that Claudia had also visited there and taken one of the pills. Later, Miss Marple finds Lee’s scarf by the quarry and the police find her body in the water at the bottom of the quarry. Lee had been paid by Rogers to curse Ellie.

Miss Marple confronts Rogers over the deaths. He confesses to the murders. His meeting with Ellie had not been accidental. Rogers and Greta had been lovers and Greta had managed their accidental meeting. Great is found strangled in the grotto.

Hayman arrives at Gypsy Acres and wishes to leave a note for Rogers before he dies. He finds his brother’s watch in Roger’s desk and realises Rogers didn’t try to save his brother, but drowned him and stole his watch. Seeking vengeance, Hayman burns down Gypsy’s acres.
