The cairn was erected in 1980 by the Orangeville Historical Society to preserve some of the heritage of Orangeville by placement of markers on its sides.

Town Clock

On top of the municipal building is a clock.
This clock was for many years on the old
stone Post Office which was demolished in
1963. Corroding away in storage the clock was
brought back to life in 1980. mr Myr Morrow,
jeweller, overhauled the mechanism; Mr J
Vanderdam, Superintendant of Works, built
the cupolathus restoring the Town Hall to its
original architecture.

(Note: the clock is now presereved on the Broadway promenade.)

Homes

This cairn marks the site of the home of William
and Mary Ann Newton, one of the first dwellings in
Orangeville. The log cabin was demolished to make
way for the Town Hall in 1875. 'Granny' Newton is
credited with suggesting the name Orangeville
for the town. Her son Isaac was the first child
born in the new settlement (in 1846) and on this
site was grown the first crop of wheat in the area.

Water Troughs

Close by is one of two water troughs which for
years adorned Broadway from the early 1800's.
Note the separate facilities for man, horse and
dog to have a drink. Lost to the town for a number
of years the fountain was donated by Jane and
Matius Stanek of Toronto in 1974.
