Sangatte is a small town west of Calais, near the chalk cliffs, across from the White Cliffs of Dover. Here, there was a significant military presence during the World Wars.
This crucifix is located in a round-about area in highway D940, on the road to the War Memorial, near some German bunkers, and multiple cemeteries for the fallen soldiers.
In April of 1915, a war Base Supply Depot was established at Calais, to support Boulogne and provide a supply base closer to the front lines than the prior bases in Havr and Rouen. Base Supply No 6 remained in operation until March 1921 when the last Commonwealth forces left France. Calais was also the location of General Hospitals Nos 30, 35 and 38 and British Red Cross hospital No 9 and Canadian Stationary Hospital No 10, combined for a total fo about 2,500 beds, for military needs. The Calais Southern Cemetery served the war needs for three years, when in 1917 a new cemetery was stared at Les Baraques, and was in use until 1921. The cemetery contains 1,303 Commonwealth graves from World War I (and an additional 250 graves from other nations), and World War II are also located here.
