At this charcoal-fuelled furnace, up to 700 tons of pig iron were produced per year from 1753 to 1876. Iron ore was imported from Cumbria, but the charcoal was produced locally using wood from the nearby forests.
Bonawe Iron Furnace is now maintained by Historic Scotland. On the site, there are also some associated buildings, for example large charcoal sheds, and an interesting exhibition about iron production at the furnace. Please note that there is an entrance fee.
