A 7' tall bronze figure of a Union soldier stands on a 22' by 7' square granite base. The soldier is wearing a knee length coat, cap, and cape. He is holding a rifle vertically with his left wrist placed on the top of the rifle and his left hand on the barrel. He is looking slightly to his left.
The lower part of the base has three steps and the front has a bronze five pointed star with the insignia of the Grand Army of the Republic. Inscribed in raise capital letters on the front:

The sculpture was created by David Richards and cast at the National Fine Art Foundry. The Chapman Granite Works did the fabrication. The monument was dedicated on May 30, 1885. Surrounding the monument are the graves of 231 Civil War veterans.
The figure of the Union soldier that went missing in 1951 was replaced in 2006.
