This windmill was moved here, possibly from West Texas, and it simply spins and adds character to the farm. It previously pumped water, and could again, if they so desired. T. Lindsay Baker explains in "A Field Guide to American Windmills" that Fred W. Axtell sold Monitor windmills in Texas -- and well -- which probably explains why the Axtell name is on one side of the tail, and the Monitor name is on the other.
The Florence Ranch Homestead is open for tours, Tuesday through Friday, from 11 AM to 4 PM. Tours of the grounds are available on the second Saturday of each month between 10 AM and 1 PM. Admission is free.
