St. Mark's Church circa 1890

In 1881, Baron von Hugel, owner of the Midland Land Company, sold lot 3 on the east side of Third Street to the Synod of the Diocese of Toronto for the nominal sum of $1. Rev. William Jupp and his sister then built St. Mark's in 1883 with a wooden steeple on the front. However, the church was little used until 1885 when the parish came into existence.

In 1953 an extension at the front of the sancturay created the narthex, choir rooms, and gallery. At the same time the old wooden tower was removed to make way for the extension. The sanctuary was left untouched and the original brickwork in the interior is currently painted white. The picture below shows the new front and the following picture shows the join of the old 1883 masonary to the newer 1953 masonary. A new cornerstone was laid when the narthex was constructed.

The doors of this church are always open and people are invited to enter the sanctuary at any time. This church has a beautiful, large stained glass window over the altar that can be seen from the entrance on Third Street.

This church holds one other important historical artifact. In the mid-1980's the church needed to find an new church organ. The local Roman Catholic diocese had acquired a fine organ that was used exactly once for the Papal Mass presided over by Pope John Paul II at the Papal altar on the grounds of the nearby Marty's Shrine on Sept. 15, 1984. St. Mark's was able to acquire this organ after the Pope's visit and it now sits in their chancel and is used for all functions.

Although dwarfed by the Catholic church next door this less imposing structure seems more open and welcoming.

This information came from the church's official centennial history provided by St. Mark's Secretary.
