The Butterworth Station is a major transit point for trains to and from Thailand to the north, and Kuala Lampur to the south, and on to Singapore. It is also an entry point to the island of Penang, portions of which are a UNESCO Heritage Site. The station adjoins the ferry terminal to the island.

Butterworth Station dates only from 1967, and at the time of this waymark in 2013, a new building was under construction. According to Bill Johnston, this diesel locomotive Built at the Dick Kerr Works of English Electric in 1948. It is on permanent display outside of the station along with the Steam Locomotive 564.25.

This locomotive was one of many built by the English Electric Company, and is one of several still preserved in Malaysia. The MalayanRailways.com - Keretapi Tanah give the following additional desctiption:

"The First Ever Diesel Locomotive in Malaysia's Maximum Permissible Trailing Load was 350 Metric Tonnes as well as not exceeding more than 45 Units of 4-Wheeler Gondolas.

According to Malayan Railway Working Time Table Number 07 Effective September 1st, 1982, this engine also may work Shunting Freighters between Tanjung Pagar - Majidee/Tampoi, Port Klang - CCM/ICI Fertilizer Plant Padang Jawa, as well as in whole Singapore Island also (Tanjung Pagar - Woodlands and Bukit Timah - Jurong)."
