William Gordon Whyte was born in 1909 and passed away in 2012 at the age of 103.

Some events that took place during his life time included Royal Canadian Navy was formed, First World War, Alcohol prohibition, birth of the Dionne quintuplets, World War II, Canada approves equality of French-English language, The Mars Polar Lander was launched, Winter Olympic Games held in Vancouver, and Parks Canada searches for the two ships lost during the 1845 Franklin expedition using a robotic "shark".
