Amtrak was formed in 1971 with service on the eastern corridor. The train called the National Limited ran from Washington D.C. to Chicago through Alliance but stopped in Canton, Ohio 15 miles to the west. In 1979 the National Limited was discontinued. In 1981 Amtrak inaugurated the Capitol Limited which ran on the PRR Pitt., Ft. Wayne and Chicago line with a stop in Canton. In 1991 the Capitol Limited was re-routed in Alliance onto the PRR Cleveland & Pittsburg line. The cities of Canton, Crestline, Lima, Ft. Wayne, Valparaiso and Gary lost Amtrak service. In 1991 a stop in Alliance was added to the schedule. The new station was built in 2013.
