The bronze figure of a Civil War color bearer stands on top of a 30' tall granite shaft on a 10' square three step base. The color bearer is holding a flag on his left side and grasping his sword with his right hand. A pyramid of four cannon balls is on each corner. Each face of the monument has carved granite block with the insignia of infantry, cavalry, artillery, and navy. The monument was fabricated by the Smith Granite Company and dedicated June 1885.
The front, south side, of the monument is inscribed on the upper and lower bands PORT HUDSON and GETTYSBURG. The base has the insignia of the infantry.

FOR THE UNION IN THE WAR OF
THE REBELLION, 1861-1865.
The east side of the monument is inscribed on the upper and lower bands ANTIETAM and CEDAR CREEK. The base has the insignia of the cavalry.
The north side of the monument is inscribed on the upper and lower bands BALLS BLUFF and FREDERICKSBURG. The base has the insignia of the artillery.
The west side of the monument is inscribed on the upper and lower bands MOBILE and NEWBERNE. The base has the insignia of the navy.
