St. Maarten is a newly independent country which was part of the Netherlands Antilles. Soon after achieving independence they issure a series of five stamps depicting sights around the country. This stamp depicts the free standing clock in Phillipsburg. Actually there are two such clocks in Phillipsburg, one in the downtown shopping area and one farther west by the Methodist Church.
It is surprising easy to figure out which one in pictured on the stamp. Notice there is blue sky beyond the clock. This eliminates the downtown clock since it is surrounded by palm trees. More importantly, notice the time on the clock - 6:30. It is not a coincidence that the photograph matches the time on the clock, nor did I wait around for 6:30 to take the picture since my cruise ship left port at 5:00 pm. Therefore the clock must be permanently stopped at 6:30.
