The Haines House sat on 126 acres of land next to one of the Underground Railway trails, now known as route 183.The house was built in 1828 and additions were added in 1842. The owners were John and Nancy Grant who were Quakers. It was passed down to Sarah Grant and her husband J. Ridgeway Haines fron Salem, Ohio. Ridgeway was a member of The Western Anti-Slavery Society. The society held meeting on the property in the 1850's. The slaves hid in the attic crawlspace until the were moved to the next house. Ridgeway died in 1899 and Sarah in 1903.
