Varsity Stadium has been home to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team since the late 1800s. In fact, the stadium, and previous constructs of it on the same site, is storied in Canadian football lore - both college and professional.

The Grey Cup was originally intended to acknowledge Canada's best amateur football team and the Varsity Blues have won it four times. That includes the first three games (1909 to 1911) and 1920. They lost the final in 1914. Varsity Stadium has hosted The Grey Cup 30 times, but not since 1957.

Since 1965, the Vanier Cup has been the national championship for Canadian college football and Varsity Stadium hosted the game 21 times between 1965 and 1988. The University of Toronto won the inaugural against the University of Alberta and since has won in 1993 (vs. Calgary) and come runner up in 1974 (vs. Western Ontario).

The Toronto Varsity Blues have won the Yates Cup, emblematic of supremacy in Ontario college football, 25 times including the first championship in 1898. They last won in 1993. Unfortunately, the team has been more synonymous with losing than winning since 1993. In the 2000s, the Varsity Blues lost 49 games in a row - the equivalent of about 6 full seasons.

Varsity Stadium has hosted many other great sporting events. I attended a couple of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches versus Mexico and soccer matches for the 1976 Montreal Olympics were held here.

Part of the stadium was demolished in 2002 and the site was largely refurbished including new grandstands, a new all weather track (in Varsity Blues blue) and an artificial turf field that is covered by a dome during winter. With the renovations seating capacity dropped from over 21,000 to about 5,000.
