In 1972, graphic artist Ivan Chermayeff created this 122" by 110" by 60" red painted steel numeral 9. It is installed on the sidewalk outside an office tower designed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. The three ton sculpture is anchored into the sidewalk with steel pins and serves to mark the building's entrance.
The Big Red 9 was added in front of the sloping building to distract pedestrians from viewing the walls of neighboring buildings. The sculpture has since become famous as a New York City landmark.
