Matthias von Neuenburg was born in 1295 in Neuenburg am Rhein, and died between 1360 and 1374. He was the author of a Latin chronicle from 1243 to 1355, that is an important contribution to Alsatian and Habsburg history and the late Middle Ages in General.
After his studies of jurisprudence at Bologna, he was solicitor of the episcopal court at Basel from 1327 to 1329. This plaque was donated by his native city Neuenburg am Rhein on occasion of his 700th birthday and mounted at the medieval building at Münsterplatz, that was the registry of the episcopal court until 1529.
The plaque says: "An den geistlichen Gerichten zu Basel wirkte um 1327 der Jurist Matthias von Neuenburg, bedeutender Chronist des Mittelalters.
1995 zu seinem 700. Geburtstag von seiner Geburtsstadt Neuenburg am Rhein."
English: "Around 1327 the lawyer Matthias von Neuenburg, an important chronicler of the Middle Ages, worked at the episcopal courts of Basel.
In 1995 to his 700th birthday by his native city Neuenburg am Rhein."
